Buff & Blue set for three games in New Jersey
GW men's water polo is back in action this weekend, facing three Northeast Water Polo Conference foes at the Princeton Invitational. The Buff and Blue are scheduled for a Saturday doubleheader vs. St. Francis Brooklyn (2:15 p.m.) and Brown (7:15 p.m.) before a quick turnaround to Sunday's finale with an 8 a.m. start vs. No. 18 Harvard.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW went 1-2 on opening weekend at the Navy Open. The Buff and Blue took down Iona, 15-8, in their season debut behind three goals apiece from Andras Levai and Andrija Sekulic before falling to a pair of ranked opponents in Princeton and Cal to finish their stay at Lejeune Hall.
STRONG START:Â Nick Schroeder has his senior season off to a flying start after scoring a team-high eight goals on opening weekend. The Orinda, Calif., native netted two goals apiece vs. Iona and Princeton before closing out the weekend with four scores vs. Cal to equal a career high. He's already surpassed the seven goals that he scored over five games during the abbreviated spring season.
RISING ROOKIES:Â GW's first-year class made an instant impact last weekend, paced by Sekulic, who finished opening weekend with five goals, an assist and six ejections drawn to earn a place on the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Rookie of the Week Honor Roll.
Bruno Rebessi (two goals, five ejections drawn) and Logan Kalish (one goal, one assist, four steals) also provided scores, while Leo Leuddemann (one field block, four ejections drawn) offered a lift from the center spot.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â St. Francis Brooklyn went 2-0 on opening weekend, dispatching Wagner and Gannon at the Bruno Classic.
Harvard dropped seven spots in the national rankings after a 3-1 start at the same tournament. Playing in their home pool, the Crimson took down Mercyhurst, Wagner and Austin College but came up short vs. Fordham, 10-8. Andrej Basica was honored as the NEWPC Co-Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
Brown lost its season-opener to Santa Clara, 14-12, before rebounding to defeat Austin College, Wagner, Mercyhurst and Gannon as part of a busy start.
UP NEXT:Â GW will face both Harvard and Brown again next Saturday, Sept. 18, in a doubleheader hosted by the Crimson that will be the Buff and Blue's final tune-up before MAWPC play begins.
