Buff & Blue dropped three games in New Jersey
PRINCETON, N.J. - GW men's water polo continued its non-conference slate over the weekend with three losses at the Princeton Invitational.
The Buff and Blue dropped a Saturday doubleheader to St. Francis Brooklyn and Brown at DeNunzio Pool before falling in Sunday morning's finale to No. 18 Harvard, 15-11.
Andras Levai paced the GW offense with 10 goals over the three games, including a season-high five scores vs. St. Francis Brooklyn.
St. Francis Brooklyn 18, GW 13:Â In Saturday's opener, the Terriers used a late surge to pull away from the Buff and Blue.
The teams went back and forth over the first three quarters with neither side leading by more than three goals. GW edged within 13-12 on Levai's tally with 6:20 remaining before St. Francis Brooklyn responded by scoring five of the game's final six goals to close out the victory.
Levai led the way vs. the Terriers with his five goals, while Nick Schroeder notched three goals and Andrija Sekulic scored twice.
Brown 13, GW 10:Â In Saturday's nightcap, the Bears came out on top in a tight battle.
GW was within a goal late in the third quarter and went to the final period down 10-8 but could never get any closer from there. Brown scored with 2:13 remaining to restore its three-goal advantage with what turned out to be the game's final tally.
Levai filled the stat sheet with two goals, an assist, three field blocks, two steals and an ejection drawn. Henry Maas and Viktor Jovanovic also netted two goals apiece vs. the Bears, while Antonin Kralj and DJ Davis both chipped in a goal and two assists.
Harvard 15, GW 11:Â First-year Leo Lueddemann scored the first three goals of his career, but the Buff and Blue came up short vs. the nationally-ranked Crimson on Sunday morning.
Harvard built a 3-0 lead in the opening minutes and stayed in front the rest of the way. The Buff and Blue closed within three goals three times in the final period, but each time the Crimson followed with an answer to extend their advantage.
Lueddemann scored all three of his goals in the second quarter, and fellow newcomer Michael Fearon also netted his first collegiate score during that period.
Levai (three goals, an assist and two steals) and Davis (two goals) recorded multi-goal performances vs. Harvard.
In net, Luca Castorina posted a weekend-high 15 saves, plus three steals and an assist, to help keep the Buff and Blue within striking distance.
