Colonials return to the diamond for the first time in 357 days
WASHINGTON -Â GW baseball will make its long-awaited return to the field on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Charlottesville, Va. to take on nationally-ranked Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.Â
Â
ABOUT LAST YEAR:Â GW's season was cut short after just 16 games a year ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Buff & Blue had gone 8-8 in the young year behind a strong pitching staff that held the second-best ERA in the A-10 at the time of the season cancellation.Â
WHO'S BACK:Â With the NCAA granting every spring sport athlete an extra year of eligibility, GW was able to bring back 24 letterwinners from last year's team including all nine starting position players and the entire weekend rotation. Junior Noah Levin, who was the 2019 A-10 co-Rookie of the Year and is a Perfect Game Preseason All-Conference selection, headlines the offense after leading the A-10 with 24 hits and ranking fourth with a .429 average last year.
ON THE MOUND:Â The Buff & Blue return their top seven pitchers in terms of innings pitched from a year ago, including Tuesday's starter, senior Justin Solt. Along with redshirt junior Harrison Cohen and graduate student Elliott Raimo, the weekend rotation had a combined 2.75 ERA in 68.2 innings a year ago. The Colonials were second in the league in ERA (3.26) and WHIP (1.33) as a staff and led the league in fewest walks allowed per nine innings (3.32).
ABOUT THE CAVALIERS: UVA is ranked in every major national poll, as high as #8 by Baseball America. The Hoos are 4-3 on the year following a series loss at North Carolina over the weekend. Zack Gelof has been UVA's top threat at the plate, hitting .385/.484/.615 in the season's first seven games with four extra base hits. Nic Kent (.321/.387/.464) and Logan Michaels (.318/.464/.318) also post an average over .300.
