GW men's water polo is back in action this weekend, closing its truncated regular season with back-to-back doubleheaders at Navy.
The Buff and Blue are set to face the host Midshipmen (10 a.m.) and Bucknell (4 p.m.) on Saturday before facing La Salle (11 a.m.) and Navy again (2 p.m.) on Sunday.
It's the final tune-up for all involved before the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship, which is also set to be hosted by the Midshipmen on March 6-7. This weekend's results stand to factor heavily into the tournament's seeding.
LAST TIME OUT: GW dropped its season opener to Navy, 8-2, on Feb. 12 at The St. James. The Midshipmen opened up a tight game with a 5-0 advantage in the third period. First-year goalkeeper Luca Castorina shined in his collegiate debut with 15 saves, and Nick Schroeder and Ford Bruggen found the net late for the Buff and Blue.
ROOKIE REVIEWS: Castorina was honored on the CWPA weekly honor roll for his performance in the opener. The first-year from Sicily held the Midshipmen scoreless into the second period en route to a sterling .652 save percentage on the day. He also added a pair of steals.
A local product out of Kensington, Md., Bruggen notched his first career score in his Buff and Blue debut and also added a field block.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Ranked ninth in the latest CWPA national poll, Navy enters the weekend at 4-1 after winning three of four games last weekend. Goalkeeper Max Sandberg has been named MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week after both weekends the Midshipmen have competed.
Bucknell split a doubleheader at Navy last weekend to open its season. Jared Stanley scored twice in overtime to help the Bison earn a 12-11 victory in the first game before the Midshipmen took the back end of the twin bill, 15-5.
La Salle is off to a 2-1 start, landing back-to-back wins over Iona after a season-opening setback vs. Navy. Most recently, the Explorers rallied from an early four-goal hole for a 15-11 victory over the Gaels on Monday, led by four scores for Kiahi Horan.

Feb. 9, 2021 marked the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Congress' establishment of The George Washington University's charter. GW Athletics is proud to be part of the university's bicentennialcelebration, honoring the historic milestone with a variety of initiatives meant to highlight the best of the Buff and Blue. Glauco Souza left his mark on the program, tallying 387 goals and 521 total points from 1990-93, a pair of marks that remain records more than 25 years later. The Brazil native scored at least 80 goals in all four seasons in Foggy Bottom, twice leading the Buff and Blue to the final of the CWPA Eastern Championship. A four-time team MVP and four-time All-Conference First Team selection, he was inducted into the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Read more about his uniquely #OnlyatGW story here.
