Buff and Blue fell to No. 9 Navy & Bucknell
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - GW men's water polo kicked off the final weekend of its regular season on Saturday, dropping a pair of competitive Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference contests at Scott Natatorium.
The Colonials fell to host Navy, 16-12, in the opener before being edged by Bucknell, 8-7.
Making his season debut, senior Andras Levai, a 2019 ACWPC All-American, paced the offense on the day, totaling four goals and four assists.
Navy 16, GW 12: In the opener, the ninth-ranked Midshipmen asserted control with a decisive surge spanning the end of the third period and the start of the fourth.
After the Buff and Blue erased a two-goal halftime deficit to tie the game at 8-8 on Nick Schroeder's score late in the third quarter, the Midshipmen tallied the next five goals in quick succession. The advantage reached 13-8 on Bobby Lee's score with 6:47 to go, and the visitors were never able to get closer than three goals from there.
Andras Levai led GW with four scores and added a pair of steals and an assist, while DJ Davis and Schroeder both scored twice vs. Navy. Gabriele Simonti, Antonin Kralj, Ford Bruggen and Kalan Smith found the net, as well.
Castorina made 12 stops in the opener.
Bucknell 8, GW 7: In a rematch of the past two MAWPC finals, the Colonials and Bison engaged in a defensive battle that went down to the final buzzer.
The contest went back-and-forth from start to finish with neither team leading by more than two goals, but Bucknell was able to hold off GW's final charge to claim the victory.
Castorina keyed the standout defensive effort, piling up a career-high 17 saves, while Simonti contributed four field blocks, in addition to his team-high three goals.
Offensively, Schroeder pitched in two goals and an assist, while first-year Viktor Jovanovic notched his first career score via a third-quarter penalty shot. Henry Maas rounded out the scorers with his first goal of the season.
UP NEXT: GW is set to close out the regular season with another doubleheader in the same pool on Sunday, taking on La Salle (11 a.m.) and Navy (2 p.m.) in its final tune-up before next weekend's MAWPC Championship.
