Kyara Frames leads GW's offense with 14 points
WASHINGTON- With the non-conference season and calendar year drawing to a close, the GW women's basketball team welcomed Patriot League preseason favorite Lehigh to DC on Tuesday afternoon for the penultimate game before A-10 conference play begins on New Year's Day.
The Mountain Hawks brought a 7-3 record to Smith Center, with all seven wins coming at home as the visitors had yet to win a game in two tries prior to Tuesday. Despite a furious late game push in an 8-0 GW run that narrowed an 11-point Lehigh lead to three, 57-54, with 4:11 to play, it was the visitors who closed on a 13-3 run to take home their first road win of the season.
After recording a stunning 29 assists on 32 field goals against Delaware State in its last game - and with an apg average of nearly 19 per game this season that ranks in the Top 15 in the nation - Lehigh brought a team-oriented offense that would test GW's vaunted D. Playing without the services of defensive stopper Mayowa Taiwo, the Buff and Blue defense just couldn't get enough stops.
Despite missing leading scorer Frannie Hottinger (16.8 ppg), Lehigh still boasted a roster that packs a scoring punch with Mackenzie Kramer (15.7), Emma Grothaus (12.9) and Megan Walker (10.5) just behind. Kramer nearly did it all on her own. In a career-best performance, the sophomore guard went off for 31 points on 10-of-16 field goals, including 7-of-10 from long range.
Offensively for GW, Kyara Frames led the way with 14 points, while Faith Blethen netted 10. First-year walk-on Maxine Engel provided an exciting spark, as the guard from Memphis, TN put her name in GW's all-time scoring column with eight points in 22:01 of play in her first taste of collegiate action.
GW gets a shot to finish off 2021 in style a week from today against visiting West Chester at 4pm on ESPN+.
