LAST TIME OUT: GW dropped a heartbreaker on Thursday night at Navy, 12-9 in overtime. The Buff and Blue scored the final three goals of regulation to force extra time, tying the contest on Viktor Jovanovic's buzzer-beater, but the Midshipmen outscored the visitors 3-0 in OT to claim the MAWPC victory.
Luca Castorina set a program record with 24 saves to keep GW within striking distance. The sophomore goalkeeper held Navy scoreless over the final 5:49 of regulation while the Buff and Blue made their comeback.
Andrija Sekulic paced the GW attack with three goals, while Jovanovic added a pair of scores and six ejections drawn to equal a career high.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE:Â Jovanovic has been a matchup nightmare from the center spot, drawing a team-high 49 ejections through 19 games. The sophomore from Calgary, Canada, is 12 ejections drawn away from cracking the program's all-time single-season top 10 list. Andrew Mavis (2017) and Glauco Souza (1992) share the program record with 76.
An All-Conference Second Team pick last spring, Jovanovic also ranks fourth on the team with 25 goals, and he's added nine steals, five assists and four field blocks, as well.Â
Jovanovic's clutch goal at Navy adds to his growing list of late-game heroics. He provided the game-winning goal in an OT victory vs. Brown on Sept. 18 and the difference-making tally with 40 seconds left in regulation in a 12-11 triumph at Johns Hopkins on Sept. 24.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â Entering the weekend, Fordham has a 20-4 overall record and sits atop the MAWPC standings at 8-0. The Rams scored a 15-7 win over the Buff and Blue in the first meeting between the teams on Oct. 9 in the Bronx.
Wagner (13-14 overall) enters its final weekend of MAWPC play with a 3-5 conference record. The Seahawks scored the game's first four goals vs. GW on Oct. 9 in Staten Island, but the Buff and Blue roared back to claim a 12-11 victory. Nick Schroeder's goal with 52 seconds remaining was the difference.
UP NEXT:Â GW closes out the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 13, with a split doubleheader. The Buff and Blue will host Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. on Senior Day at Smith Center Pool, before heading to Navy for an 8 p.m. start.
