Buff & Blue fell to Wagner and Fordham at Smith Center Pool
WASHINGTON - GW men's water polo continued its Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference slate in its home pool on Sunday, falling in both ends of a doubleheader.
The Buff and Blue lost the opener to Wagner, 12-5, before dropping a 13-11 battle vs. No. 15 Fordham at Smith Center Pool.
Antonin Kralj and Nick Schroeder netted four goals apiece on the day to pace GW, which sits at 8-13 overall and 5-5 in MAWPC play going into the final weekend of the regular season.
Wagner 12, GW 5: The Seahawks rolled to a wire-to-wire victory in the first game of the day.
The visitors built a 3-0 lead after one quarter before the Buff and Blue edged back to within a goal on second-period scores from Kalan Smith and Schroeder.
Wagner responded by scoring the next five goals with two of them before halftime and three more out of the break. Jack Leighton's score with 5:50 left in the third quarter made it 8-2.
Smith notched a career high with three points via two goals and an assist, and Schroeder posted a goal, an assist and a team-high two steals. Bender Russo and Bruno Rebessi also scored vs. Wagner.
Luca Castorina was credited with 18 saves in the opener.
Fordham 13, GW 11: The back end of the twin bill was an entertaining clash from start to finish with the MAWPC-leading Rams digging in defensively down the stretch to spoil the Buff and Blue's upset bid.
Neither team led by more than a goal until the final minute. The Rams tallied a buzzer-beating goal before the halftime break to go up 9-8, and they still held a one-goal edge going to the final period before Antonin Kralj's fourth score of the game knotted the score at 11 with 5:11 remaining.
That turned out to be the final goal for the Buff and Blue. The Rams went back in front on a tally by Jacopo Parrella with 4:12 left and then stymied a series of attempts by the home team to even the score.
Ultimately, Fordham was able to pad its advantage with 44 seconds remaining and run out the clock to take the victory.
Kralj was excellent on both ends, finishing with four goals, two assists, four steals and an ejection drawn. Schroeder scored all three of his goals in the second period, while Davis notched two goals, two assists and three field blocks.
Viktor Jovanovic and Andrija Sekulic also contributed goals.
Castorina did his part in the GW net amid heavy pressure from the Rams, piling up 19 saves, plus a steal and an assist.
UP NEXT: GW wraps its regular season next Saturday with a split doubleheader. The Buff and Blue will host Johns Hopkins at 10 a.m. on Senior Day at Smith Center Pool, before traveling to Navy for an 8 p.m. start.
