
Men's Water Polo Closes Regular Season with Sweep

Buff & Blue knocked off Johns Hopkins & Navy on Saturday
WASHINGTONÂ - GW men's water polo wrapped its regular season with a flourish on Saturday, sweeping a split Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference doubleheader.
The Buff and Blue celebrated Senior Day at Smith Center Pool in the morning with an 11-6 win over Johns Hopkins before landing an 11-10 triumph over No. 19 Navy in the nightcap at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
With the two victories, GW locked up third place in the MAWPC regular season standings while gaining momentum heading into next weekend's conference tournament.
Nick Schroeder set the pace in the sweep, tallying seven goals on the day.Â
GW 11, Johns Hopkins 6:Â After honoring Andras Levai and Zachary Pendolino in a pregame Senior Day ceremony, the Buff and Blue put together a sterling defensive effort to sink the Blue Jays. The home team allowed three goals over the first six minutes and then ceded just three more the rest of the way.
GW erased an early two-goal deficit and went to the halftime break tied at 4 before going in front for good on Schroeder's penalty shot in the opening minute of the second half.
After Johns Hopkins edged within 6-5 in the final minute of the third quarter, GW ran off four straight goals to put the game out of reach. Schroeder, Viktor Jovanovic, DJ Davis and Antonin Kralj provided the scores.
Schroeder led the way in the victory with four goals, an assist and two steals, while Levai and Davis tallied two goals apiece. Jovanovic had a goal and five ejections drawn, and Kralj finished with a team-high three assists in addition to his fourth-quarter goal.
Luca Castorina made nine saves in the victory, and six different members of the Buff and Blue recorded steals as part of the lockdown defensive effort.
GW 11, Navy 10:Â After a lengthy wait for the nightcap, the Buff and Blue put their best foot forward to edge the Midshipmen and avenge last week's overtime loss in the same pool.
GW trailed 2-0 early on before running off five straight goals. Five different student-athletes scored during the burst.
The visitors led by two at the break, pushed the advantage out to four goals in the third period and maintained that cushion into the final period. Schroeder's final score made it 11-7 with 4:54 to go.
From there, GW weathered one final push from the Midshipmen. The home team scored three straight goals to get within one with 1:16 remaining before the Buff and Blue managed to dig in defensively and hold on.
Schroeder and Leo Lueddemann netted three goals apiece in the victory, while Andrija Sekulic tallied a goal, two assists and two steals. Nik Schoening made a difference on both ends with two helpers and a team-high four steals.
Jovanovic, Davis, Pendolino and Bender Russo also scored in the victory.
Castorina was credited with 10 saves vs. the Midshipmen and also added a pair of assists and a steal.
UP NEXT:Â GW heads to the MAWPC Championship, which runs next Friday through Sunday at Navy. The bracket for the tournament will be finalized following the conclusion of conference play on Sunday.
