Nick Schroeder was honored as the MAWPC Player of the Week after recording a team-high seven goals on the day, while Luca Castorina made 19 saves against 16 goals allowed to pick up the league's Defensive Player of the Week award for the third time this fall.
CHAMPIONSHIP MEMORIES:Â GW has reached the MAWPC Championship final in four of the past five seasons, including title victories in 2017 and 2018.
The Buff and Blue are 10-3 at the tournament in that span with wins against seven different programs. Andras Levai is the lone student-athlete on the roster who was part of both title runs, and seniors DJ Davis, Henry Maas, Zachary Pendolino and Nick Schroeder were rookies during the 2018 campaign, which saw the program record its first NCAA win and advance to the national quarterfinals.
LEVAI'S LEGACY:Â Levai enters his final trip to the MAWPC Championship with his place in program history secure.Â
The graduate student from Budapest, Hungary, begins the tournament with 274 career goals and needing just five scores to tie Andrew Mavis for No. 3 on the program's all-time scoring list.
He also ranks in the top five in program history in assists (203, second), points (477, fourth), steals (185, fifth) and field blocks (46, fifth).
Levai has been a major factor in GW's recent MAWPC Championship success, landing on the All-Championship Team in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He set his career high with eight goals in an MAWPC semifinal win over Fordham in 2017 and notched eight steals in a victory over the Rams at the 2019 conference tournament.
GREAT IN GOAL:Â Castorina has been terrific in net throughout the season, piling up 302 saves vs. 270 goals allowed for a .528 save percentage.
The sophomore goalkeeper has averaged 13.1 stops per game while also tallying 39 steals and 13 assists. He's currently tied for third with Austin Pyrch (2018) for third on the program's single-season saves list and just four stops away from tying Steve Nadherny (1992) for second.
Castorina made history at Lejeune Hall on Nov. 4 when he set a program single-game record by making 24 saves vs. Navy.
MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Jovanovic has been a tough matchup all season long, drawing a team-high 64 ejections through 23 games to rank 10th on the program's single-season list.Â
The sophomore from Calgary, Canada, enters Friday's game 12 away from the record of 76 shared by Mavis (2017) and Glauco Souza (1992). He has drawn multiple ejections in every MAWPC contest this season, including a pair of outings in which he earned six power plays for the Buff and Blue.
An All-Conference Second Team pick last spring, Jovanovic also ranks fourth on the squad with 28 goals, and he's added 13 steals, six assists and six field blocks, as well.
NICK'S TIME:Â With his seven scores last Saturday, Schroeder moved into a tie for the team lead with 40 goals alongside Levai.
The senior from Orinda, Calif., has set career highs in goals and points (57) this fall.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â GW owns wins over five of the other seven teams in the field (Navy, Bucknell, Wagner, JHU, Mount St. Mary's).
The Buff and Blue swept Johns Hopkins during the regular season with a 12-11 win in Baltimore on Sept. 24 before the more comfortable victory in their home pool last weekend.
Fordham is the tournament's top seed after going 11-1 during the MAWPC regular season, while No. 4 Bucknell is seeking its third straight conference crown.
