Buff & Blue downed Johns Hopkins on Friday night
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - GW men's water polo took its first step toward a conference title on Friday night, blasting Johns Hopkins, 12-6, in a Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Championship quarterfinal at Lejeune Hall.
Andras Levai netted a team-high three goals to pace a dominant effort that powered the third-seeded Buff and Blue past the sixth-seeded Blue Jays. They advance to face host Navy on Saturday at 6 p.m. with a spot in Sunday's final on the line.
GW scored the game's first five goals and never let up the pressure on JHU. The Buff and Blue took a 6-2 lead into halftime before running off the first three goals out of the break. Nick Schroeder's goal with 6:10 remaining in the game pushed the advantage to 12-3.
Kicking off the three-day tournament, GW was excellent on both ends. Six different scorers contributed goals, including Levai's hat trick and two goals apiece from Schroeder, Leo Lueddemann and Viktor Jovanovic.
The defense held the Blue Jays scoreless over the first 12:20 of the game, led by another terrific performance in net from Luca Castorina, who tallied 17 saves in the victory. Antonin Kralj was responsible for three of the Buff and Blue's 13 steals as part of the lockdown effort.
GW now faces second-seeded Navy in the semifinal round with a chance to advance to the MAWPC final for the fifth time in six years. The winner will play either No. 1 Fordham or No. 5 Wagner for the title.
GW and Navy split a pair of meetings late in the regular season with the Buff and Blue claiming an 11-10 victory last Saturday in the same pool.
