GW, George Mason tip-off at noon
WASHINGTON - The #RevolutionaryRivalry continues on Sunday afternoon at EagleBank Arena as GW and George Mason square off for the first of two meetings this year. Tip is set for 12 p.m. with a live stream available on ESPN+.
SEASON OF ACTION: This week, GW is bringing awareness to mental health, emphasizing that "IT'S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY." The team will be wearing special green t-shirts for contests at Richmond and George Mason to spread the message in-game.
Junior Maddie Loder will also be hosting a WebEx on Friday in conjunction with the GW branch of "The Hidden Opponent," an advocacy group that raises awareness for student-athlete mental health and addresses the stigma within sports culture. The group's mission statement is to empower athletes around the world to face the hidden opponent together.
SETTLING IN: GW turned the ball over a season-low six times on Wednesday at Richmond, the second straight game in which the Buff & Blue committed fewer than 10 turnovers. As a result, the Colonials improved to second in the A-10 in turnovers per game (14.5) and third in the league and 63rd nationally with a +3.2 turnover margin. GW has committed the fewest miscues in league play (11.0 per game) and paces the loop with a 1.14 assist-to-turnover ratio.
THE DEFENSE IS THERE: GW held Richmond to 47 points, including just six in the fourth quarter, on Wednesday, the third time this season an opponent has failed to reach 50 points. The Buff & Blue are now third in the A-10 (62nd NCAA) by FG percentage defense (.363) and fourth in scoring defense (64th NCAA), allowing 59.8 ppg.
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS: George Mason is 3-8 on the year, having dropped its first four conference games to Fordham, Davidson, Dayton and VCU by an average of 18.8 ppg. The Patriots have had to deal with the departure of leading-scorer Nicole Cardaño-Hillary, who transferred to Indiana following last season. In her place, Marika Korpinen has assumed the primary scoring load, averaging 11.7 ppg overall and 12.3 ppg against conference competition. Daijah Jefferson, a Georgia Tech transfer, averages 9.0 ppg and paces the squad with 7.6 rpg. As a team, Mason averages 53.5 ppg and shoots 30.2% from the floor, both ranking last in the A-10.
