Colonials wrap 3-1 weekend at The Vern
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball dropped its weekend finale on the Mount Vernon Campus, falling 6-1 to Monmouth on Sunday afternoon.
Despite the setback, the Colonials finished their Buff and Blue Challenge with a 3-1 mark over three days.
Monmouth jumped in front on Amanda Hopeck's two-run home run in the top of the first and stayed ahead the rest of the way. The Hawks led 3-0 in the seventh when Kayla Rosado hit a three-run shot to pad the advantage.
GW took advantage of an error to get one back on Maggie Greco's RBI groundout that scored Mia Parker in the bottom of the inning, but the Colonials couldn't extend the rally.
After totaling 22 runs with the help of seven homers in three victories to start the tournament, GW's bats were quieted Sunday by Monmouth's Alyssa Irons. The 2019 MAAC Pitcher of the Year kept a shutout into the seventh inning, allowing one unearned run on two hits in the complete-game victory.
Jenna Cone reached all three times Sunday with a single and two walks, closing an impressive weekend with a .545 batting average (6-for-11), two home runs, four RBIs and four runs. She reached base in nine of 14 plate appearances, highlighted by a two-run homer vs. Rider on Saturday that plated her 200th career RBI.
Alessandra Ponce produced GW's other hit vs. Monmouth with a double to the right field fence in the sixth inning.
Megan Osterhaus went the distance in the circle for the Colonials, allowing six runs on eight hits in the longest outing of her career. The sophomore from Minnesota set a career high with four strikeouts.
ON DECK:Â GW has a busy week ahead, hosting No. 19 Virginia Tech (Tuesday, 3 p.m.) and a doubleheader vs. Bucknell (Wednesday, 1 p.m.) in midweek action at The Vern before welcoming Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game set next weekend.
