Colonials welcomed nationally-ranked Hokies to The Vern
WASHINGTONÂ - GW softball took on its toughest home challenge in recent memory Tuesday, falling to No. 17 Virginia Tech, 9-0, in six innings on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The nationally-ranked Hokies looked the part behind the tremendous pitching of ace Keely Rochard. The nation's leader in wins and strikeouts, the junior pitcher tossed a complete-game one-hitter with 12 strikeouts over the six frames.
Jessica Linquist provided the hit for the Colonials, ripping a double over the center fielder's head to lead off the fourth inning. The Buff and Blue also battled in the sixth with Valentina Perrone and Jenna Cone working walks before Rochard was able to close out the run-rule victory.
Virginia Tech took the lead in the top of the first with a pair of unearned runs and then added on with a four-run third inning and a three-run sixth. The Hokies flexed their power with three home runs vs. the Colonials, plus two triples and a double.
Reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week Faith Weber (6-8) got the start for GW and pitched the first three innings before Kaitlin Buff tossed three frames of relief in the Buff and Blue's second matchup vs. a ranked opponent this season.
ON DECK:Â GW has a quick turnaround with Bucknell visiting Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Colonials will host Maryland Eastern Shore for a three-game series this weekend, as well.
