Jenna Cone homered in both ends of the twinbill
WASHINGTONÂ - Jenna Cone homered in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to help power GW softball to a pair of wins on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Cone launched a two-run shot in a 5-2 victory over Rider before going 4-for-4 with a solo blast in a 10-2 triumph in six innings over Monmouth.Â
The senior slugger drove in four runs and scored four more on the day. She now has a team-high six long balls on the season and 56 for her career.
The Colonials finished the sweep in epic fashion with Faith Weber hitting a towering grand slam to end the second game via run rule.Â
The senior jack-of-all-trades also starred in the circle, picking up a save in the opener before earning the win vs. the Hawks with a complete-game effort.
GW 5, Rider 2:Â The Colonials shook off a slow start and found their stride to knock off the Broncs in the opener.
After Rider jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, GW produced an immediate answer. Jessica Linquist walked to lead off the bottom of the inning and then scored on Cone's first long ball of the day.
The Buff and Blue took the lead later in the inning with Elena Shelepak's RBI groundout scoring pinch runner Darbie Stancil.
The Colonials padded the lead an inning later thanks to RBIs from Hannah Eslick and Linquist.
Four GW pitchers combined to stymie the Broncs. Megan Osterhaus retired all nine batters she faced before Mia Parker, Kaitlin Buff and Weber followed.Â
Parker was credited with her first career win, and Weber struck out the side in the seventh to nail down her first save of the season.
GW made its six hits count, highlighted by Cone's homer and Eslick's RBI double. Parker also recorded her first career multi-hit performance with a pair of singles.
GW 10, Monmouth 2 (6 innings):Â Weber's all-around excellence made a difference as the Colonials dispatched the two-time defending MAAC champion Hawks for their fifth straight win.
Staked to an early lead, Weber roared through the Monmouth lineup, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits over six innings with five Ks. She retired 11 of the final 12 hitters she faced to improve to 6-7 on the season.
At the plate, Weber set a career high with her five RBIs. The New Jersey native knocked in a run with a groundout in the first inning and then delivered the finishing blow in the sixth. Her first career grand slam hit off Ames Hall beyond the center field fence.
GW flexed its offensive muscle with a 14-hit attack. The Buff and Blue plated two runs in the first, one in the second and another in the fifth before exploding for five more in the sixth.
Cone had a hand in every rally. The California native singled and scored in the first, knocked in Eslick with an infield hit in the second, homered in the fifth and then singled and scored again in the sixth. Her second four-hit game of the season raised her average to a team-best .377.
Sidney Bloomfield also went 4-for-4 in the second game, while Eslick continued a hot-hitting weekend with a solo homer to lead off the sixth.
Shelepak finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a steal, and Linquist walked twice and scored both times.
ON DECK:Â GW looks to complete a perfect weekend when it faces Monmouth again Sunday in a noon start to close the Buff and Blue Challenge.
