Tournament Central)
GW faces Towson on Friday in a 2 p.m. start to begin the weekend before also taking on Morgan State, Princeton and Georgetown. This starts a run in which the Buff and Blue are scheduled to play their next 19 games at home.
LAST TIME OUT: GW showcased its power en route to a 2-2 weekend at UNCW's Seahawk Softball Classic. Faith Weber, Jenna Cone and Alessandra Ponce went deep as part of the offensive onslaught in Saturday's 15-10 win over host UNCW, and then Weber hit a pair of solo homers to account for the runs needed for a 2-1 win over Brown in Sunday's finale.
Weber was named A-10 Player of the Week for her all-around efforts over the four games. The senior went 2-1 in the circle with a 3.89 ERA and 19 strikeouts over 18 innings, highlighted by her complete-game effort vs. Brown in which she held the Bears without an earned run. She hit .300 (4-for-12) with the three homers and five RBIs, as well.
Sidney Bloomfield also enjoyed a productive weekend at the plate, hitting .636 (7-for-11) with a pair of extra-base hits, three runs and two RBIs. The junior outfielder raised her team-leading batting average to .361 on the season.
NEW HEIGHTS: Weber has adapted well to her newfound role in the everyday lineup. The senior from New Jersey has started all 14 games between pitcher, second base and the outfield, and she has already set single-season career highs in hits (12), home runs (3), RBIs (7) and runs (5). She's also well on her way to career-best pitching numbers, leading the team in wins (3), innings pitched (34.1), strikeouts (25) and complete games (3).
OFF AND RUNNING: GW was aggressive on the bases last weekend, totaling seven steals in 11 attempts.
After swiping just one bag in two tries over the first two weeks of the season, the Colonials were able to display their speed with Bloomfield, Jessica Linquist, Alessandra Ponce, Elena Shelepak, Maggie Greco, Hannah Eslick and Paris Orchard all credited with one steal during their stay at UNCW.
GOOD TO BE HOME: GW is set to play 29 games on the Vern this season, looking to continue its recent success in its home park.
The Colonials won a program-record 23 home games last season against eight losses. Over the past three seasons, they are 58-22 (.725) on home turf.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Towson sits at 4-5 after falling to Pittsburgh and host ECU at the Pirate Invitational last weekend. The Colonials and Tigers split a doubleheader at Towson last spring.
Morgan State (2-7) earned its first two wins of the season last weekend in Florida, besting Stetson and Oakland as part of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic. The Bears visited the Vern last season and split a midweek doubleheader vs. GW.
Princeton opened its season with a tournament at Houston last weekend. The Tigers knocked off Syracuse in their 2020 debut before falling to the host Cougars and Louisiana Tech.
Georgetown (3-12) went 2-3 last weekend in Florida, earning wins over Cornell and Manhattan. The Colonials will face the crosstown Hoyas again at the Vern on April 1 in midweek action.
ON DECK: GW continues this homestand next weekend with the Buff and Blue Challenge. The Colonials will play a total of four games over three days vs. Winthrop, Rider and Monmouth, beginning on Friday, March 6.
