Colonials and Billikens square off at 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball will look to make it three wins in a row and even their conference record on Sunday afternoon, welcoming in the Saint Louis Billikens for a 2 p.m. tip on CBS Sports Network.
A WELCOME SIGN: GW's defense has begun rounding into form the last two games, holding UMass to an opponent season-low 27.9% from the floor on Sunday and then limiting St. Joe's to 17 points in the first half on Wednesday. Overall, the Buff & Blue have held four of their last five opponents to 37% shooting or worse.
In their nine wins this year, the Colonials are holding teams to 52.9 ppg and 34.4% shooting, compared to 68.5 ppg and 44.6% shooting in losses. The Buff & Blue are now 31-2 under Coach Rizzotti when allowing fewer than 50 points.
GET USED TO IT: First-year Faith Blethen broke out of a recent shooting skid to hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter at St. Joe's on Wednesday, vaulting her back to fifth in the A-10 in 3-point shooting at 38.8%. She's directly ahead of redshirt freshman teammate Tori Hyduke, who is sixth at 38.4%.
Together, the two make up the best 1-2 deep ball tandem in the league and have hit 59 of GW's 102 made triples this year. GW is one of just two teams (Richmond) to have a pair of players in the top 10 of the league in 3-point accuracy.
LEAPS AND MAUNDS: Graduate student Alexandra Maund tied her career high with 18 points on Wednesday as part of her first GW double-double (3rd career), adding 10 rebounds and four assists. She has elevated her game in league play, leading the team with 13.7 ppg while shooting 56% from the field, marks that rank 12th and third, respectively, against A-10 foes.
Maund's output is made even more impressive due to her efficiency, playing the second-fewest minutes of any of the top 13 scorers in the league and averaging 20.9 points/40 minutes.
HISTORY VS. SAINT LOUIS: The Colonials and Billikens meet for the only time this season and inside the Smith Center for the first time in over two years. GW is looking for its first home win over Saint Louis under head coach Jen Rizzotti, dropping the only previous matchup in overtime in 2018. The Buff & Blue own an 11-5 advantage in the all-time series, but have dropped three of the last four meetings overall.
A LOOK AT THE BILLIKENS: Saint Louis enters Sunday with an identical 3-4 conference mark thanks to victories over La Salle, St. Bonaventure and most recently Duquesne last Sunday. The Billikens feature a potent quartet in its starting lineup with four double-digit scorers: Ciaja Harbison (15.0), Kendra Wilken (10.5), Myia Clark (10.3) and Rachel Kent (10.2). Harbison was dynamic in last year's matchup with 21 points, 19 of which came after halftime.
The Billikens possess the league's second-best scoring defense (36th nationally) and field goal defense (47th nationally), posing another challenge for the Buff & Blue after facing the A-10's top unit in Saint Joseph's this past Wednesday.
