Colonials open conference play with Revolutionary Rival
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball opens up Atlantic 10 play Saturday at the Smith Center, hosting Revolutionary Rival George Mason at 5 p.m.
The game serves as Alumni Day for the program with all alumni encouraged to attend and be recognized during the match. Additionally, it's the first Wine Down of the season with a special hour-long pregame event from 4-5 p.m. taking place in the Champions Club. A ticket to the event, which includes admission to the match, is $20.
LAST TIME OUT: GW finished its non-conference tournament slate with a 1-2 weekend at the Creeds & Crests Classic at Texas State. The Colonials opened the weekend with a stirring fifth-set comeback win over Sam Houston State before falling to Texas State and UTSA.
Senior setter Jaimeson Lee, returning to her home state of Texas, was named to her third All-Tournament Team of the year, averaging 7.2 assists and 2.8 digs per set.
ACROSS THE NET: George Mason ended its non-conference schedule with a sweep of William & Mary on Saturday to improve to 4-8 on the year. The Patriots are led by senior Bailey Williams, who leads the team with 3.54 points and 3.10 kills per set, and sophomore Erin Derick, who averages 8.79 assists per set.
The Colonials are looking to exact some revenge after Mason won both matches last season. GW still owns a significant edge in the all-time series, winning 41 of the 51 matches between the programs.
IT'S IN THE BLOCK: GW's strong defensive season at the net continued with a season-best 16.5 blocks in the five-set win over Sam Houston State last Friday. The Colonials now have five matches this year with double-digit blocks and rank second in the conference with 2.4 blocks per set, ranking 54th nationally.
Individually, first-year Addie Feek has risen to the top in blocks per set, leading the team and ranking fourth in the A-10 with 1.11 rejections per frame. Graduate students Caroline Sklaver (1.0, t-9) and Paty Valle (0.93, 13th) also rank among the league's top 15.
ACE IN THE HOLE: Valle added five more service aces to her ledger last weekend, bringing her season total to 21, second-most in the league. She continues to pace the A-10 and rank among the top 50 nationally with 0.49 aces per set. Saturday's match against UTSA was the sixth time this season, and third time in the last four matches, that Valle has notched multiple aces in a single match.
