
Women’s Tennis Earns No. 2 Seed for A-10 Championship

Colonials to face #7 Fordham/#10 George Mason on Thursday

SERVING FIRST: The George Washington women's tennis team is set to compete at the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 2 seed from April 25-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Colonials' No. 2 seed matches the highest they've earned going into the tournament.
REGULAR SEASON WRAP-UP: The Colonials (11-9, 5-2 A-10) have had a strong spring under the direction of Torrie Browning. GW concluded the regular season with a 7-0 sweep over George Mason and won all but one of its conference matches by more than one point.
Individually, first-year Katarina Marinkovikj made a strong impact for the Colonials in the spring with her 14-5 singles mark at #4, tied for the team lead along with doubles partner senior Sara Grubac, who went 14-5 split at #2 and #3. In doubles play, the pair also paced the team with a 10-8 record and 5-1 mark in A-10 play. Senior Maria Siopacha, the 2018 A-10 Co-Player of the Year, continued her success into her senior season, going 11-9 all at #1 while wrapping up the regular season on a three-match win streak.
TOURNAMENT TIME: GW, as the No. 2 seed, and top-seeded VCU will both receive a first-round bye and will begin championship play on Thursday at 3 p.m. Massachusetts received the No. 3 seed, followed by Duquesne (4), Davidson (5), Richmond (6), Fordham (7), Rhode Island (8), Saint Louis (9), George Mason (10), Dayton (11), Saint Joseph's (12), St. Bonaventure (13) and La Salle (14).
The Colonials will take on the winner of the first-round match between Fordham and George Mason.
AT A-10s: A year ago, the Buff and Blue went into the tournament as the No. 2 seed after notching the most wins in a season and finishing conference play with a program-best 6-1 record. GW kicked off championship play with a 4-0 victory over Dayton in the quarterfinals before falling to Massachusetts, 4-2, in the semifinals.
