The Colonials finished third to qualify for the Women’s National Championship
For the fifth consecutive season the GW sailing team has qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championship, by virtue of a third-place finish at their conference championship last weekend.
Competing against a field that included seven teams ranked in the top-20 nationally, the eighth-ranked Colonials turned in a steady effort across Divisions A and B to finish on the podium. Amidst strong winds on the East River in New York, GW utilized its depth by rotating crews between divisions to take fourth place in A and fifth in B.
Riley Legault skippered Division A with crews Sarah Noyes (races 1-6) and Alexandra Fayer (7-16), while Aitana Mendiguren skippered Division B with Emma Mendenhall (races 1-4) and Noyes (races 5-16). The balanced finishes left GW behind only No. 11 Penn and No. 7 Cornell in the overall standings.
Following the regatta, the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association All-Conference Women's Skippers were announced, with Legault earning a first team nod for the second consecutive season.
"I'm proud of how the team performed to get the job done and qualify for nationals," said head coach Billy Martin. "I'm excited to have the season continue and look forward to seeing what this group can do at nationals next month."
GW was also in action at the Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup hosted by Harvard on the Charles River, finishing 13th against a deep field.
The Colonials have a pair of regattas on their slate next weekend: the America's Trophy Regatta at Hobart College and the Arrigan Memorial hosted by Georgetown.
