Colonials’ underclassmen take the reigns for the weekend on the water
The George Washington sailing team tuned up with a trio of regattas over the weekend. The Colonials relied on their underclassmen to hold it down on the water, taking home a fourth place finish at the Washington College Fall, an eight place showing at the Women's Showcase B Finals, and had three of four boats finish in the top six at The Oyster Bowl.
"We had a good weekend," said head coach Billy Martin. "We were in three events again this weekend, so we've had plenty of opportunities to get out on the water. At this point we're getting ready for our conference championships, which is why we sent primarily underclassmen, and no seniors, over the weekend. They really stepped it up and I'm happy with their progress."
Washington College Fall (4th of 13)
The Colonials finished fourth at the Washington College Fall. In A Division, captain John DeRuff paired up with first-year Ruby Gordon for the first race of her collegiate career. The pair took seventh. In B Division, the team of Ryan Janov, Sydney Register, and Sylvia Fresco finished fourth.
The Oyster Bowl (3rd, 5th, 6th, 11th of 18)
The Buff and Blue had three of its four boats place in the top-six at the Oyster Bowl, which featured a combined division with 18 boats.
The duo of Anthony Minder and Kaleigh Morgan took third while Matt Priebe and Taylor Milefchik finished closely behind in fifth. Owen Timms and Cassondra Parker rounded out the Colonials' top performing boats with a sixth place finish.
Soenke Jordan and John Umina crossed the finish line ahead of seven other boats, taking home 11th.
"To have four boats, and three in the top six, definitely shows our depth with our younger sailors on the team," said Martin. "The results have been a little up and down this season, but we've focused on learning and building up their knowledge base and it's showing."
Women's Showcase B Finals (8th of 14)
Starting two first-year skippers and two sophomore crews, the Colonials took eighth at the Women's Showcase B Finals. Julia LaForgia and Chiara Perotti Correa represented GW in A Division while Islay Van Dusen and Sarah Hardee held it down in B Division.
"Getting our sailors reps on the water at St. Mary's, where our championship is going to be in two weeks, is going to be really key. Once we pair these young sailors, who had a really nice outing this weekend, with our senior leadership, we're going to progress well this season."
