In a final tune-up before next weekend's conference championships, the George Washington sailing team tuned up in the sailing capital of the world in Newport, Rhode Island for the Coed East Coast Showcase Tournament hosted by Salve Regina this weekend.
A team of six hung in through a challenging first day of racing on Saturday to put itself in position on Sunday for a top-third-of-the-fleet finish. With sophomore Matt Logue skippering A Division, crewed by senior Michael Houllahan and sophomore Ana Carrasco Solla, and sophomore Michael Ehnot at the helm in B Division with fellow classmates Allison Forsyth and John Umina splitting crew duties, GW's sprint to the finish on Sunday included a first and second place finish in the final two races, respectively, for Logue and Solla in A, and a mirroring second and first place finish to conclude the regatta for Ehnot and Forsyth.
In all, GW finished in the top three in A Division in five of 14 races, and a matching five top-3 finishes for the B Division sailors, including a pair of wins.
"We're really happy with this result," said Head Coach Billy Martin. "We moved up a good bit on Sunday after making some solid adjustments to finish on a high note. Everyone sailed really well. Saturday was a grind as it was very breezy, but we kept our head in it the whole day in tough conditions. Sunday we executed the game plan well and sailed fast. Now we're looking strong going into conference championships next weekend."
