Sailing Posts Fifth and Sixth Place Showings at Conference Championships

The George Washington sailing team wrapped up its 2019 fall fleet racing season this past weekend at Conference Championship events hosted in Maryland and New York.

MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championships (5th out of 12):Â

The GW women finished the fall in 5th place in the uber competitive MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championships with a score of 129 total points, topping rival Navy in a head-to-head tiebreaker. Racing in A Division were Aitana Mendiguren and Sarah Noyes, with skipper Julia LaForgia skippering B Division crewed by Clare Cassidy-Gardner, Taylor Milefchik and Kaleigh Morgan. Both Divisions of GW sailors finished sixth to combine for the cumulative fifth place tally.

"We spent a lot of time and worked really hard on our first years," said assistant coach Catherine Shanahan. "They performed well this fall."

War Memorial Regatta Championship (6th out of 18):Â

GW's coed squad took sixth overall at the MAISA Conference Championship, the War Memorial, hosted at Kings Point.
Â
With variable conditions throughout the weekend, GW utilized a bevy of sailors and showcased its depth in the country's most competitive conference.
Â
"The crews on both sides faced a range of different conditions," said Shanahan. "The team was prepared and was able to produce a strong result."
Â
Racing in A Division were Matt Logue, Ana Carrasco Solla, Michael Houllahan, and Matt Priebe. The Colonials finished 10th with a score of 104 points. Meanwhile, in B Division, Michael Ehnot, Allison Forsyth, and Jack Umina took sixth place.Â

"Our B Division sailed really consistently, so that was positive to see," said Shanahan. "It was overall a really good end to the season. Now we'll look forward and gear up for the spring season."
