Sailing Sees Coed Season End at America Trophy

The Colonials just missed out on a trip to nationals with a 10th-place finish
The GW sailing team saw its coed season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion last weekend with a 10th-place finish at the America Trophy hosted by Navy. With the top nine teams moving on to the national championship, the Colonials came up just short of reaching nationals for what would have been a fourth consecutive year.
Due to a lack of wind, only two races were completed in each division on Sunday, limiting GW's chance of mounting a comeback. The Colonials had gotten off to a promising start on Saturday when Andrew Sheerin and Zach Lehan won the first race of the day in Division A. Through five races in each division GW was in seventh place, but slipped out of qualifying range by the close of the day.
In the end, the Colonials finished with a total score of 228, narrowly behind the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, which grabbed the last qualifying spot with a score of 222. The host Midshipmen brought home the championship with a score of 98.
GW had representation on both the all-conference teams announced following the regatta, as Alexandra Fayer was named first team all-crew and Sheerin earned second team all-skipper honors. Wade Wagner, meanwhile, was the recipient of the prestigious Purrington Award for student leadership and outstanding contributions to sailing. It's the second straight season a GW sailor is the recipient after Belle Strachan won it in 2018.
GW was also in action at the Arrigan Memorial Regatta hosted by Georgetown. Adam DiDomizio and Cassondra Parker led four Colonials boats with a third-place finish.
Though GW's coed season ends, the Colonials will still compete in the ICSA Women's National Championship, slated for May 21-24 in Newport, R.I.
