The finish is the best in school history
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Showing off its depth against a field which included six of the top-10 teams in the nation, the No. 9 GW sailing team recorded its best finish in program history at the Dellenbaugh Women's Trophy last weekend by taking fourth place in the 18-team regatta.
The Colonials finished fourth in both A and B Divisions with steady performances from skippers Riley Legault and Aitana Mendiguren, and crews Alexandra Fayer, Emma Mendenhall, Sarah Noyes and Marie Line. All four crews saw time in A Division, helping GW finish in the top-seven in eight of 14 races. Noyes and Mendenhall split crew duties in B Division, partnering with Mendiguren to finish in the top half of the field in all but one race.
No. 1 Yale topped the field with a score of 114, outpacing No. 3 Brown (181), No. 8 Harvard (196) and GW (199). The Colonials finished in front of two top-10 opponents in No. 5 Cornell (sixth place) and No. 7 MIT (seventh place). GW has been in the top third of the field at the Dellenbaugh for three of the last four years, taking fifth in 2016 and sixth in 2018.
"We saw a wide range of conditions, but we really showed our skill in all of them," said assistant coach Catherine Shannahan. "We were very consistent all weekend and the wind came up pretty heavy on Sunday. It was low 20s and building in A Division and we were so fast. It was really impressive to see. There was a lot of depth in this regatta so for us to sail so consistently was really huge going into conference championships. It was a really exciting weekend and fourth is a really strong finish."
GW returns to Team Racing next weekend as the Colonials head to the Prosser Trophy, which serves as the conference championship and qualifier for the team race national championship.
