Colonials kicked off 2019 at Gardner-Webb Tournament
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - George Washington softball roared back from an early deficit to drop Furman, 6-4, on Friday afternoon and earn a split of their season-opening doubleheader at the Gardner-Webb Tournament.
The Colonials kicked off their spring earlier in the day with a 7-2 loss to local foe Georgetown at Brinkley Stadium.
Sidney Bloomfield collected five hits in six at-bats to get her sophomore season off to a flying start, while Marta Fuentes totaled four hits, two runs and a pair of stolen bases on the day.
In the circle, Sierra Lange allowed just one earned run over 7 2/3 innings of work, notching a save with three perfect innings in the victory over the Paladins.
GW 6, Furman 4:Â After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the third, the Colonials responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning on the way to their first win under head coach Shane Winkler.
GW did its damage in the third via five singles, plus a walk and a Furman error. After the first three Colonials reached, Fuentes knocked an RBI single into left field.Â
Jenna Cone and Elena Shelepak followed with run-scoring singles to tie the game before Cone raced home with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Cone added an insurance run in the fifth with another RBI single to score Fuentes.
That was enough offense for the Colonials, who held the Paladins to just two hits.
Kaitlin Buff picked up the victory after allowing four runs (three earned) over the first four innings. The junior bounced back after ceding a three-run home run and a triple in the third with a 1-2-3 fourth.
Lange took it from there, retiring all nine she faced with four strikeouts to pick up the second save of her collegiate career.
Georgetown 7, GW 2:Â Bloomfield finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base, but the Colonials fell short in their season opener.
Georgetown scored the game's first seven runs, plating one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Savannah Jones was the offensive catalyst for the Hoyas with three triples, three RBIs and two runs scored.
GW finally broke through against Georgetown's Katie Vannicola with a spirited seventh-inning rally. Bloomfield's two-run single got the Colonials on the board scoring Lange and Alessandra Ponce, and they had the bases loaded threatening for more when the game ended. The Buff and Blue produced five of their nine hits in the final frame.
Fuentes and Jessica Linquist also collected a pair of hits for GW.
ON DECK:Â GW continues its stay in North Carolina on Saturday with a doubleheader against Furman (10 a.m.) and host Gardner-Webb (2 p.m.). The Colonials wrap up the tournament Sunday with a rematch against Georgetown at 11 a.m.
