Colonials knocked off Furman before falling to hosts
The Colonials settled for a doubleheader split for the second straight day, dropping their second game, 10-1, to the tournament hosts in five innings. They'll have a chance to clinch a winning opening weekend in Sunday's finale against local foe Georgetown.
Back from a knee injury that cut short her 2018 season, Linquist sparked GW (2-2) against the Paladins with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. The junior from New Jersey also knocked in the lone run against Gardner-Webb.
GW 9, Furman 4:Â GW (2-2) scored in five of seven innings in the opener, shaking off the Paladins with a five-run fourth.
Nine different Colonials recorded hits in the victory with Linquist and Sidney Bloomfield notching two apiece.
Linquist got the Buff and Blue started with her solo shot in the first inning before the Colonials added on with single runs in the second and third.
After Furman tied it at 3 via a pair of home runs, GW took control in the fourth, taking advantage of three errors to push across the five runs.Â
Morgan Kummer, Riley Tejcek and Bloomfield all singled and came around to score in the frame with Tejcek, Bloomfield and Elena Shelepak picking up RBIs.
Marta Fuentes manufactured GW's final run in the sixth. The senior shortstop laid down a bunt single and stole two bases before scoring on Linquist's ground out.
GW's leader with 15 wins a year ago, Sierra Lange earned her first victory of the season, while Kaitlin Buff tossed the final three innings to garner the first save of her collegiate career.
Gardner-Webb 10, GW 1 (5 innings):Â Gardner-Webb piled up eight runs in the opening frame and cruised to the run-rule victory to close out the doubleheader. The first nine Runnin' Bulldogs reached as they rolled out to the big lead in the bottom of the first.
Both of GW's hits came in the bottom of the third with singles by Hannah Eslick and Marta Fuentes setting up Linquist's sacrifice fly.
ON DECK:Â After wrapping up the tournament Sunday against Georgetown at 11 a.m., the Colonials have next weekend off before returning to North Carolina for the Campbell Invitational, which runs Feb. 22-24.
