Colonials swept Lafayette on Saturday
WASHINGTONÂ - Sierra Lange's one-hit gem in the pitching circle on Sunday afternoon highlighted another doubleheader sweep for George Washington softball.
The Colonials beat Lafayette, 2-0, in the opener behind Lange's dominant 14-strikeout effort before taking down the Leopards, 7-4, in the second game to clinch a perfect 4-0 weekend at its home on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Lange wrapped a fantastic weekend in which she posted three wins with a 1.40 ERA in 15 innings with 26 Ks and also hit .692 (9-for-13) with three extra-base hits.
Jenna Cone also had a productive home debut, hitting .571 (8-for-14), including three more hits Sunday, to help the Buff and Blue improve their record to 7-2.
GW 2, Lafayette 0:Â In a pitcher's duel, Hannah Eslick came through with the clutch hit.
The newcomer's two-out, two-run single in the fourth produced what turned out to be the game's only runs. The hit brought home Lange and Bulanadi, who had started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Lange took it from there, completing the third shutout of her career.Â
After allowing a two-out triple in the first, the sophomore hurler retired the final 19 batters she faced. Along the way, she set a career high by striking out the 14 Leopards.
Lange and Elana Shelepak recorded two hits apiece.
GW 7, Lafayette 4:Â The Colonials broke open a tight contest with a five-run fifth, ignited by a two-run home run off the bat of Jessica Linquist.
The game was tied at 2 before Linquist launched her third round-tripper of the season. GW would add three more in the frame, boosted by five straight two-out singles. Priscilla Martinez, Eslick and Sidney Bloomfield knocked in the other runs.
Earlier, Linquist had gotten the Colonials on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the third. The junior from New Jersey finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs to boost her team-leading total to 12 in nine games.
Lafayette struck for two runs in the sixth, but Megan Osterhaus came on in relief and snuffed out the threat. The first-year from Minnesota followed with a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up her first career save.
The win went to Jayme Cone in relief. It was the first victory for the senior since April 2017 after missing all of last season due to injury.
Eslick, Bloomfield and Jenna Cone accounted for two hits apiece as part of a 14-hit attack.
ON DECK: Next week, GW is set for five games at the Carolina Classic before returning to the Vern to kick off a 17-game homestand.
