Colonials beat FAU and UNC on Thursday
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sierra Lange was marvelous in the circle and at the plate Thursday, powering George Washington softball to an impressive doubleheader sweep at the Carolina Classic.
The sophomore from Texas tossed back-to-back complete game shutouts and totaled five hits as the Colonials took down Florida Atlantic, 6-0, before beating host North Carolina, 7-0.
Lange continued her torrid start to the season, pitching all 14 innings without allowing a run to improve to 7-1 on the year. She scattered 10 hits and recorded 13 strikeouts to run her scoreless streak to 21 innings and lower her season ERA to 1.38.Â
Offensively, Lange posted two doubles with three runs and two RBIs. She had plenty of help there, led by Elena Shelepak, who knocked in four GW runs in game two with help from her first home run of the season. The Buff and Blue (9-2) posted 21 hits in all to back Lange.
GW 6, Florida Atlantic 0:Â What started as a pitcher's duel turned into a comfortable victory thanks to some late offense from the Colonials.
GW broke through in the fourth with Criza Bulanadi scoring on a two-out error and added another when a throwing error on a Sidney Bloomfield steal allowed Riley Tejcek to head home.
The Colonials padded their lead with a four-spot in the top of the seventh. Lange had an RBI double in the frame and later scored on another FAU error before Alessandra Ponce closed the scoring with her first home run of the season.
FAU put runners on base in six of seven innings, but Lange deftly pitched around trouble to preserve the shutout. She survived seven hits with help from seven strikeouts against just one walk.
The top of GW's lineup was responsible for much of the offense with Jessica Linquist (first), Lange (third), Ponce (fourth) and Shelepak (fifth) recording two hits a piece.
GW 7, North Carolina 0:Â The Colonials left no doubt against the host Tar Heels, leading from start to finish with a sparkling all-around effort.
A leadoff walk from Linquist keyed GW's two-run first inning. Ponce and Shelepak notched RBIs to put the Buff and Blue ahead for good.
The Colonials chased UNC starter Katie Grace Olinger in the second and added two more runs against reliever Hannah Nommensen in the third courtesy of Shelepak's RBI double and a run-scoring miscue by the Tar Heels.
The lead reached 5-0 in the fourth when Lange helped herself with an RBI double to score Linquist before Shelepak punctuated GW's first win in three tries against the Tar Heels with her two-run blast in the seventh.
A 2018 Second Team All A-10 pick, Shelepak finished 3-for-4 with to net her season-high four RBIs. Lange also tallied three hits against the Tar Heels, while Linquist reached three times with a double and two walks.
Lange completely disarmed the Tar Heels, limiting the ACC Coastal Division favorites to just three hits in a masterful effort that began less than an hour after the conclusion of her first shutout Thursday.
Lange seemed to get stronger as the game went on, allowing just one hit over the final four innings. She completed an amazing day with a 1-2-3 seventh, closing with a swinging strikeout on three pitches.
UP NEXT:Â GW is back in action Friday against Maryland at 10:30 a.m. They close the weekend by taking on Fairfield (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) and UNC Greensboro (Sunday, 3:30 p.m.).
