WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball honored its trio of seniors on Sunday at the Smith Center and did so with a complete team victory in a 57-44 triumph over St. Bonaventure. Mei-Lyn Bautista, Kelsi Mahoney, Anna Savino and manager Elizabeth Placheril were honored prior to the game for their contributions to the program and then went out and won the 75th game of their careers.
A full team effort was needed from GW (7-7 A-10), as it played without the services of Bautista for the first time since her freshman season due to concussion protocol. No matter, Savino came out and drilled a three in the game's opening two minutes and followed with a layup two minutes later to put GW quickly on top 7-3.
The Colonials limited the Bonnies (5-9 A-10) to just one made field goal on 15 attempts in the first quarter and took a 15-4 lead into the second following Savino's second triple of the frame in the final minute.
GW didn't stop there, pushing the lead to as many as 15, at 24-9, in the second quarter on the backs of a 9-0 run that featured one of two Mahoney triples on the day.
The visitors whittled their way back into the game, closing to within three at 31-28 via a 10-1 run in the middle stages of the third. However, Mahoney knocked down a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, spurring a 7-0 spurt in just over a minute to regain a double digit advantage at 38-28.
St. Bonaventure didn't go away, rallying to within four with 4:16 remaining, but sophomore Lexus Levy drilled a corner 3-pointer to stop the swell. Savino provided the proverbial dagger via a slashing layup with 38 seconds remaining, and both she and Mahoney earned standing ovations as they were taken off the court following two Mahoney free throws with 25 seconds left that accounted for the final margin.
Mahoney led three Colonials in double figures with 12 points and six rebounds, her third straight game with at least 12 points. Savino reached double figures for the second time in her career, providing 10 points and four rebounds. First-year Maddie Loder scored all 10 of her points after halftime, corralled five boards and dished out four assists.
The Buff & Blue shot a season-best 46.5 percent (20-of-43) from the field, hitting 6-of-12 from beyond the arc and 11-of-13 at the charity stripe. On the other end, GW limited St. Bonaventure to 29.0 percent (18-of-62) and just 6-of-20 from deep (30.0 percent).
All nine players who dressed for GW scored with seven of the nine registering multiple rebounds and at least one assist. Sophomore Neila Luma ripped down a season-high 11 boards as GW outrebounded the Bonnies, 38-32.
The Colonials remain in a three-way tie for seventh in the Atlantic 10 with two games remaining before the conference tournament. GW will host its final regular season home game on Wednesday against Duquesne at 7 p.m. The Dukes enter in a two-way tie for fourth at 9-5 in the league.
