The Colonials took a 3.5 to 2.5 victory over FAU in the finals on Tuesday
WESTON, Fla. – The GW men's golf team claimed the title at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championship with a 3.5-2.5 win over Florida Atlantic in the finals on Tuesday at Weston Hills Country Club.
After knocking off Dayton and Oakland by the same margin in rounds one and two on Monday, the Colonials found themselves in a tight match yet again on Tuesday. Adrian Castagnola was first off the tee for GW and halved his match thanks to a clutch par putt on 18. First-years Luis Alfonso Preciado and Logan Othmer were next out and both delivered full points to give the Colonials a 2.5-0.5 advantage. With his match all square after 13 holes, Preciado got hot and won three holes in a row to claim a 3 & 2 victory. Othmer, meanwhile, responded to dropping the first hole of his match by winning the next two and then holding the lead throughout in an eventual 2 & 1 victory.
Florida Atlantic would stage a comeback by taking victories in the fourth and fifth matches, cutting GW's lead to 2.5-2.0. It came down to senior Logan Lowe, who delivered the goods with a 2 & 1 win over Sully Zagerman, his 10-foot par putt on 17 clinching the match and the championship.
Lowe finished the championship with a perfect 3-0-0 record, while Preciado was also undefeated with a 2-0-1 record. All six Colonials won at least one match during the tournament.
