
Volleyball Sweeps George Mason, Clinches Postseason Berth

GW hits season-best .330 in rout of Revolutionary Rival
FAIRFAX, Va. - GW volleyball secured its spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a clean sweep of Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Friday night, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.
GW improved to 7-5 in the A-10 and clinched its spot as one of the six teams that will compete for the A-10 tournament title Nov. 22-24 at Rhode Island. The Colonials are in the tournament for the first time since 2017 when they became the first No. 6 seed in A-10 history to reach the semifinal round.
The Buff & Blue make their mark thanks to the best attacking day of the season, hitting .330 with 46 kills in 94 attempts. It marked the first time GW had hit over .300 in a match in more than two years, dating back to Oct. 2017.
Senior Skylar Iott was the catalyst again with 15 kills, bringing her total to 48 in eight sets against Mason this year. Senior Jordan Young hit .421 with 11 kills in 19 attempts to give the Colonials two with double-digit kills.
GW owned every statistical category, including kills (46-34), assists (43-30), aces (7-6), digs (30-26) and blocks (8-5). Junior Callie Fauntleory hit an eye-popping .778 with seven kills in nine swings to go along with four block assists.
The Patriots tested the Colonials throughout out an opening set that featured eight ties and two lead changes. GW found itself trailing 17-16, but three straight points broke open the back-and-forth as the Buff & Blue ultimately finished off the set with a block from Jordan Young and Caroline Sklaver.
GW seemed to have control of the second set, utilizing a 6-1 run to open up an 18-13 advantage. Mason responded with five straight points to tie the set before GW came right back with a 7-1 run to finish off the set. Young again provided the exclamation point, this time with a kill, to end the frame.
The third was yet another back-and-forth tussle with 17 ties and six lead changes. Neither team led by more than three the entire frame, but GW finished off the set with four of the final five points to win the match in straight sets.
The Colonials finish out the regular season at home next weekend, welcoming Fordham (Friday 7 p.m.) and Rhode Island (Saturday 5 p.m.) to the Smith Center. Saturday's match will be Senior Day as the Colonials honor Skylar Iott, Jaimeson Lee, Caroline Sklaver, Paty Valle and Jordan Young in a pregame ceremony.
