Volleyball Stumbles vs. Fordham in Five-Set Heartbreaker

Lee sets new career high with 57 assists
WASHINGTON - The GW Volleyball match at the Smith Center on Friday night was not for the faint of heart. Unfortunately for the home team, it also wasn't for the win column either. Despite sprinting out to an early one set lead by cruising in the first without ever trailing, and subsequently taking the third set after Fordham stole the second, the Buff and Blue couldn't close out the Rams in either the fourth or fifth set.
GW held leads in both of the final two sets and looked to have Fordham on the ropes, but the feisty visitors never laid down. The Rams rallied from down 19-15 in the fourth, and 13-7 in the 15-point fifth to stun the Colonials and the rowdy Smith Center crowd.
After each side took a set in the first two stanzas without ever trailing, both the third and fourth sets were a thrill with eight ties and four lead changes in each. The fifth and final set saw five ties, and GW had match point opportunities starting at 14-11, but the lone lead change of the final frame went Fordham's way when it went ahead 15-14 and went on to win 17-15 to take the match.
Senior setter Jamieson Lee ran the show for GW as she double-doubled with 24 digs and a new career-high 57 assists, while first year Sarah Pintel was also a bright spot with her career-high 14 kills. Skylar Iott -- who was feted before the game for reaching 1,000 career kills earlier this season -- put down 26 kills in a double-double effort with 14 digs.Â
Alas, too many unforced errors did the Colonials in, but they don't have time to dwell on it with Senior Night on Saturday providing an opportunity to regain focus ahead of next week's A-10 Championship. Iott, Lee, Jordan Young, and graduate students Paty Valle and Caroline Sklaver will be honored before the game against Rhode Island for their contributions to GW.Â
First serve from the Smith Center comes at 5 p.m. following GW men's basketball's game vs. Morgan State at 1 p.m.Â
