Colonials to honor seniors prior to Saturday's match
WASHINGTON -Â GW volleyball finally returns to the Smith Center after three weeks on the road, finishing out the regular season by hosting Fordham (Friday 7 p.m.) and Rhode Island (Saturday 5 p.m.).
WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:Â Friday is the final Wine Down Friday of the season in the newly refreshed Tin Tabernacle club. Fans can purchase Wine Down and game ticket combo for $20 and enjoy wine and light bites from 6-7 p.m.Â
Saturday is Senior Day with the Colonials honoring Skylar Iott, Jaimeson Lee, Caroline Sklaver, Paty Valle and Jordan Young in a pregame ceremony that is slated to start at 4:55 p.m. Fans with tickets to the 1 p.m. men's basketball game against Morgan State can show their ticket for free admission to the match. Â
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW clinched a spot in the A-10 Tournament for the second time in three years under head coach Sarah Bernson with a sweep of George Mason last Friday. The Colonials hit a season-best .330 against the Patriots, the best attacking day since Oct. 2017. Iott had 15 kills, while Young hit .421 with 11 kills in 19 attempts. Junior Callie Fauntleroy hit .778 with seven kills in nine swings.
ACROSS THE NET: The Rams of Fordham enter play 3-9 in conference play following a win against Davidson to finish out last weekend. Fordham needs a pair of wins this weekend and some help to make the A-10 Tournament. The Rams are one of the best defensive teams in the league, pacing the circuit with 18.1 digs per set, a mark that ranks sixth nationally. Libero Morgan Williams is fifth individually with 6.07 digs per stanza. GW is 33-11 in the series all-time after splitting the two matchups a year ago.
Rhode Island is 2-10 in league play and will be wrapping up its season this weekend at the Smith Center. The Rams are third in the league in digs per set, buoyed by Ella Ratloff, who is second in the circuit and 24th nationally with 5.13 per frame. Setter Annie Eli dishes out 8.94 assists per set, ranking fourth in the A-10. GW won both matchups against URI a year ago to improve its overall record in the series to 34-38.
THANK YOU SENIORS:Â The Buff & Blue will honor their three seniors and two graduate students prior to Saturday's game against Rhode Island. The three seniors - Iott, Lee and Young - will be competing in their third A-10 Tournament of their careers next week, aiming to advance to at least the semifinals on each occasion.Â
Iott enters the weekend closing in on the program's top 10 all-time in kills, needing 26 to crack the list. Lee is already seventh all-time in career assists. GW's graduate students - Sklaver and Valle - have been invaluable additions to the program this year, ranking in the team's top three in points, kills and blocks.
UP NEXT:Â GW has already qualified for next week's Atlantic 10 Tournament, hosted by Rhode Island from Nov. 22-24. By virtue of tiebreakers, the Colonials are locked into the 4th seed and will play 5th-seeded La Salle on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with the championship on Sunday at 2 p.m.
