Colonials put three in double figures in wire-to-wire triumph
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke set the tone for the 2019-20 GW women's basketball season on Wednesday night at Finneran Pavilion, drilling a wide-open 3-pointer just 15 seconds into the game. The Colonials rolled from there, never trailing in a 68-56 thrashing of Villanova to open the campaign.
GW, which started four newcomers and saw six student-athletes make their Buff & Blue debut overall, showcased a new balanced attack that showed poise and tremendous chemistry despite the relative youth and inexperience.
Hyduke's triple was quickly followed by a 3-pointer from redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta two possessions later as the new-look GW backcourt ended up drilling 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Zambrotta led a trio of Colonials in double figures with 17 points, 15 of which came in the first half. The Louisville transfer then showcased her distribution skills in the second half with four of her five helpers coming after halftime.
Hyduke finished with 10 points in her first collegiate action, and corralled six rebounds to go along with two assists. Graduate student Alexandra Maund gave GW three in double digits in scoring with 12 points and six rebounds.
Eight of the nine Colonials who played scored with junior Neila Luma (nine points & seven rebounds) and sophomore Kayla Mokwuah (nine points & six rebounds) nearly joining their teammates in double figures.
GW's tenacious defense held Villanova to 34 percent shooting, including a paltry 7-of-31 (23 percent) showing from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Buff & Blue connected on 44 percent from the floor, going inside for 40 points in the paint while converting 15 Wildcat turnovers into 16 points.
The Colonials grew the advantage to 13 at halftime thanks to an 11-0 run over the final 3:30 of the first half, and extended the run to 23-4 midway through the third quarter on a jump shot from Maund off a great pass from Luma to make it 50-29.
The lead swelled to as high as 22 early in the fourth quarter and didn't drop below 15 until the final minute of the game.
The win gives GW its first 1-0 start since 2015-16 and a chance to improve upon that with the home opener on Sunday against defending Ivy League champion Princeton. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
On Friday, women's basketball will celebrate several alumnae as they enter the GW Athletic Hall of Fame. Elisa Aguilar ('00), Anna Montañana ('06), and the 1996-97 Elite Eight team will be among the inductees.
