Iott and Young team up for 30 kills in four-set win
DAVIDSON, N.C. -Â GW volleyball opened up its weekend with an important four-set triumph at Davidson Friday afternoon, besting the Wildcats 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-19.
Seniors Skylar Iott and Jordan Young led the charge for the Colonials, racking up a combined 30 kills. Iott paced the club with 17 kills in 50 attempts, hitting .240 while Young finished a kill shy of matching her season, but still recorded 13 kills and hit .219.
GW's block controlled the match as the Colonials registered 16 rejections, eight each from junior Callie Fauntleroy and senior Jaimeson Lee, with Lee setting a new career-high in the process. The Buff & Blue also held edges in attack percentage (.190 - .167) and aces (8-2).
The win was critical for the Colonials in regards to the A-10 tournament as GW improved to 6-4 in the league. GW is now 1.5 games ahead of the Wildcats for fourth place in the A-10 standings.
The Buff & Blue took control of the match early, winning the first two sets prior to intermission. Leading 23-19 in the first, Young delivered a kill followed by a block from Lee and graduate student Paty Valle to claim the first stanza.Â
GW utilized a 7-0 run in the second set to gain command before fending off a Wildcat rally to win on a kill from Valle. After dropping the third set, 25-23, GW responded by never trailing in the fourth and finishing off the match with a kill from Iott.
Following an off-day Saturday, the Colonials will trek to VCU for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday in Richmond, Va.
