Colonials aim to solidify postseason positioning
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball is set for its final multi-game road swing of the season, heading out to take on Davidson and VCU this weekend. The Colonials and Wildcats are set to tangle on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. matinee with the Rams on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: GW ran into trouble against two of the top teams in the circuit last weekend, falling in straight sets at Dayton and Saint Louis. After a tough match against the league-leading Flyers, the Colonials battled the Billikens to the brink on Sunday in a hotly-contested three-set match. Senior Skylar Iott paced the Buff & Blue attack with 20 combined kills.
ACROSS THE NET: Davidson enters play Friday just a half-game behind the Colonials in the A-10 standings following a split last weekend against Duquesne and La Salle. The Wildcats are led by junior middle blocker Ellie Crosley, who paces the A-10 with a .392 attack percentage. Freshman Madeline Wynn is third in the league at 1.29 blocks per set and has been named the A-10 Rookie of the Week four times. The two teams split a year ago, each winning on their respective home floors.
VCU is one of two remaining unbeatens in the circuit and has dropped just two sets in eight matches, both in its conference opener against La Salle. The Rams have won 11 in a row overall and are the nation's best blocking team with 3.38 blocks per set. Senior middle blocker Jasmin Sneed leads the NCAA with 1.73 rejections per frame and is second overall in total blocks. VCU won both matchups a year ago between the two programs.
INSIDE TRACK: GW enters play this weekend at 5-4 in league play with five matches remaining. The Colonials sit in fourth place in the A-10, a half-game ahead of Davidson and two games clear of a postseason tournament spot. With three weeks of action remaining, the Buff & Blue need a combination of three victories or Duquesne losses to clinch its second trip to the A-10 tournament in three years.
ACE UP THEIR SLEEVE: Despite being held to a combined six aces last weekend, the Colonials are still on top of the A-10 with 1.61 aces per set, a mark that ranks 45th in the nation. Graduate student Paty Valle paces the Colonials with 30 aces, one of just three players in the league to reach the threshold thus far. GW is 10-5 this year when recording at least five aces in a match, compared to 2-6 when its held below five.
