Colonials top Dukes to post perfect weekend
WASHINGTON - Building off the momentum from Friday's five-set thrilling victory, GW volleyball finished off a 2-0 weekend with a straight-set triumph over Duquesne on Saturday evening (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) at the Smith Center.
Senior Skylar Iott provided the highlight of the evening with her 1,000th career kill in the third set. Needing 10 kills entering the night to hit the milestone, Iott finished with a team-best 13 kills and double-doubled with 12 digs.
Overall, the Buff & Blue utilized a strong serve game with 10 aces and a balanced blocking effort with 10.5 rejections to keep the Dukes at bay. GW improved to 5-2 in A-10 play in the process, and swept Duquesne for the second time in three weeks.
Senior Jaimeson Lee tallied her fifth straight double-double by orchestrating the Colonials offense with 31 assists in addition to 10 digs. Sophomore Bella Bowman held down the backline with 22 digs, to give GW three in double figures.
GW took control of the match early with a wire-to-wire win in the opening set, buoyed by six blocks while holding the Dukes to .050. The second set highlighted the Colonials' serve with five service aces in the stanza to make the difference in a set that featured eight ties and five lead changes.
In the third, the Colonials found their offensive groove with their top hitting set of the day at .132. Iott paced the attack with six kills in the frame while senior Jordan Young provided five of her 10 kills on the day.
The Colonials continue their busy weekend by stepping out of conference for the final time this season, visiting Norfolk State on Monday at 6 p.m.
