Colonials welcome La Salle and Duquesne before traveling to Norfolk State
WASHINGTON -Â GW volleyball continues its four-game homestand with a pair of rematches at the Smith Center this weekend, hosting La Salle and Duquesne on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. The Colonials then wrap up non-conference play at Norfolk State on Monday at 6 p.m.
WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:Â Friday's match is a Wine Down Friday featuring a pregame happy hour in the Champions Club beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets to the event, which include a match ticket, are $20. Friday is also the annual Dig Pink match to raise awareness and research of breast cancer while supporting the Side-Out Foundation.
LAST TIME OUT:Â The Colonials ran into two hot teams last weekend, falling in straight sets to Saint Louis and Dayton at the Smith Center. Senior Jaimeson Lee recorded a pair of double-doubles with 25 assists and 10 digs against the Billikens, followed by 24 assists and 10 digs against the Flyers.
WELL, HELLO AGAIN: GW squares off with Duquesne and La Salle for the second time in three weeks, sweeping both teams on the road on Oct. 4 and 6, respectively. Both teams are 2-3 in conference play following a five-set win for the Dukes at the Explorers last weekend.
La Salle is one of the top attacking teams in the league, pacing the circuit with 13.5 kills and 12.7 assists per set. Kathryn Wood is the A-10's top setter in regards to helpers with 10.3 assists per set. Duquesne is paced by Liz Wayne, who is second in the conference with a .377 attack percentage for a team that hits .196 overall.
GW and Norfolk State are also renewing acquaintances after the Colonials swept the Spartans at the Pirate Invitational on Sep. 13. NSU earned its first win of the season on Monday against Morgan State and will take on Howard on Friday before battling the Buff & Blue.
SETTING UP SUCCESS:Â Lee's 49 assists over the weekend gave her 2,396 for her GW career, moving her past Alyssa Valentine (2008-09) and Corinne Hensley (1983-86) into 8th all-time in program history. She needs just 28 assists to surpass Karen Thomas (1982-85) for 7th all-time. At her current rate, Lee could reach as high as sixth in the program record book.
ON THE VERGE:Â Similarly, Skylar Iott is knocking on the door of a milestone with 972 career kills entering the weekend. Iott has posted double-digit kills in four of the Colonials' five league matches thus far, including a 33-kill performance on Sep. 28 against George Mason. Her current pace would launch her into the school's all-time top 10 list, potentially as high as seventh.
