Colonials suffer first conference loss of the campaign
WASHINGTON - A hot-swinging Saint Louis squad cooled off GW volleyball on Friday night, as the Colonials fell in straight sets (19-25, 19-25, 20-25) at the Smith Center.
The Billikens came out with a fury, recording 16 kills in each of the first two sets while attacking at over .280 in each of the first two sets. SLU (9-8, 3-1) ended up swinging .250 for the night while holding the Colonials (9-8, 3-1) to just .100.
Senior Skylar Iott paced the GW attack with 12 kills on 42 swings with classmate Jordan Young recording seven kills, four of which came in the third set. Senior Jaimeson Lee racked up her eighth double-double of the season, and third in conference play, with 25 assists and 10 digs.
The Billikens' balanced attack caused havoc the majority of the night for GW as six different visitors recorded at least five kills. The balance was prevalent from the beginning when a crucial 4-0 run broke open a 13-13 tie in the opening set that ultimately led to a 25-19 win.
A similar trend appeared in the second set as the two teams had nine ties to get to 10-10. However, Saint Louis registered seven of the next eight points to gain control, ultimately taking the set 25-19.
The Billikens jumped out to a four-point lead at 17-13 in the third before the Colonials rallied with five of the next six points to close within one at 19-18. A service ace swung the tide back in the visitors' favor as they never relinquished the lead to finish off the sweep.
