Colonials remain at home for matches with La Salle, Duquesne next week
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball was on the verge of an opening-set triumph before seeing the first-place Dayton Flyers roar back and ultimately take the match in straight sets (26-24, 25-15, 25-21) on Saturday night at the Smith Center.
GW (9-9, 3-2) had a 24-22 edge late in the first set, but the Flyers (12-6, 5-0) ran off the final four points to steal the stanza and the momentum. Dayton rolled through the second set to take the 2-0 lead.
The Flyers held an 18-14 advantage in the third set prior to the Colonials running off a 5-1 run to even things at 19 on an ace from junior Sydney Welch. But UD responded with four straight points after a timeout to regain enough cushion to finish off the match.
Senior Skylar Iott topped the Colonial attack with 12 kills and seven digs. Setter Jaimeson Lee tallied her second double-double of the weekend with 24 assists and 10 digs, also providing four block assists.
First-year Sarah Pintel added to her impressive weekend as well, hitting .308 with six kills, a dig and a block assist.
The Buff & Blue remain at home for two matches next weekend, welcoming in La Salle on Friday at 7 p.m. and Duquesne on Saturday at 7 p.m. GW swept both teams on the road last weekend.
