Colonials looking for best start in A-10 play in 25 years
WASHINGTON -Â Off to a 3-0 start in conference play, GW volleyball aims to set a new standard as it opens up a four-game homestand this weekend. The Colonials play host to Saint Louis on Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming in Dayton on Saturday at 5 p.m.
WEEKEND HAPPENINGS:Â Friday's match will feature a special appearance from GW's pep band, Colonial Brass. Saturday is Pride Night as part of the University's Celebration of National Coming Out Day.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials swept their way through a weekend in Pennsylvania with straight-set triumphs at Duquesne and La Salle. Graduate student Paty Valle was named the Capgemini Colonial of the Week after recording 15 kills in two matches and showcasing strong defense with 10 block assists and two digs.
MAKING HISTORY:Â GW's 3-0 start marks its best opening to league play since 2015, and just the ninth time in program history the Buff & Blue have won the first three conference matches. The Colonials are looking to start A-10 play 4-0 for the first time since 1994 when the team won its first five matches, finished 13-1 in league play and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
ACROSS THE NET:Â Saint Louis is 2-1 in league play following a five-set win over Fordham and a sweep of Rhode Island last weekend. The Billikens boast junior Maya Taylor, a two-time A-10 Offensive Player of the Week honoree who ranks second in the league in kills per set and points per set. As a team, SLU is second in the circuit in kills per set and paces the league in team aces. GW is 8-15 all-time against the Billikens but has won two straight, including a sweep at the Smith Center last year.
The defending A-10 tournament champion Flyers come to town on Saturday as one of the two other unbeaten teams in the league (VCU). Led by three-time A-10 Player of the Week Jamie Peterson, the Flyers have dropped just one set in three league matches. Peterson leads the league in kills per set and points per set, ranking in the nation's top 25 in both categories. UD has won nine straight in the series with GW looking for its first win since 2014.
THE RIGHT COMBO:Â It's not hard to see how the Colonials have opened up with a hot start to league play as GW has hit at a significantly more efficient clip than its opponents. The Buff & Blue are third in the league with a .201 attack percentage and rank second in opponent hitting percentage at .117. GW has averaged 3.2 more kills per set than its opponents and used a strong block (2.73 blocks per set) to limit the opposition's opportunities.
