GW schedule highlighted by NCAA rematch with Harvard
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW put together a perfect opening weekend at the Navy Open, highlighted by a 15-14 win over Wagner last Friday. The Colonials also scored double-digit wins over Salem International, La Salle and Iona as part of the event.
Atakan Destici posted a team-high 22 points via 11 goals and 11 assists and was named Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Defensive Player of the Week after leading a Buff and Blue defense that yielded just 8.5 goals per game. Andrew Mavis netted a team-high 12 goals on the weekend, while Andras Levai (11 goals, 8 assists, 9 steals) also put together a strong start to his season.
READY TO HELP:Â GW received impressive production from its newcomers at the Navy Open with all eight of them scoring at least one goal. Josh Yardley, a first-year from Pennsylvania, led the group with nine goals, four assists and seven steals. Finn Lillis, Nick Schroeder and Henry Maas each scored four times in their first collegiate tournament.
SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST:Â The Lancers went 2-2 at last weekend's San Diego's Triton Invitational with wins over Chapman and Loyola Marymount. The Colonials will see them again next weekend at the Aggie Shootout.
SCOUTING IONA:Â The Gaels went 1-3 at the Navy Open, finishing with their 18-7 loss to GW. The Colonials scored the first eight goals of the game and cruised to victory led by Levai's two goals, four assists and career-high eight steals.
SCOUTING HARVARD:Â The defending Northeast Water Polo Conference champion Crimson are off to a 2-2 start, highlighted by a 15-14 win over then-No. 7 UC Davis in last Saturday's season opener.
GW and Harvard combined on an overtime thriller in last season's NCAA Tournament. In their national tournament debut, the Colonials built a two-goal fourth-quarter lead before the Crimson forced overtime and advanced with a 15-13 victory.
UP NEXT:Â GW heads to the West Coast next weekend where it will compete in the Aggie Shootout at UC Davis with four games over three days, including two against currently ranked foes.
