
Men's Water Polo Secures Winning Weekend

No. 18 Colonials scored road win at Fordham on Sunday
NEW YORK -Â Behind five goals from Atakan Destici, George Washington men's water polo beat Fordham, 14-7, on Sunday morning to clinch a winning opening weekend of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play.
The 18th-ranked Colonials improved to 10-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play with the win at Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center, which will host the MAWPC Championship in November.
GW broke open a tight game by outscoring Fordham 6-0 in the second quarter. Destici's goal in the opening minute of the period gave the Colonials the lead for good at 4-3, and a score by Andrew Mavis with 22 seconds remaining in the first half stretched the advantage to six.
In addition to his team-high goal total, Destici added an assist and two steals, while Andras Levai posted three goals, five assists, two steals and two field blocks.
Jack Kerwin netted a career-high four goals in the victory over Fordham (4-7, 0-3 MAWPC). The senior from Connecticut increased his season total to 20, which is already a career high.
Mavis and Jordan Blosser also found the net for the defending MAWPC champion Colonials.
Austin Pyrch (12 saves) and Matt Taylor (four saves) combined to hold Fordham to just four goals over the final three quarters.
UP NEXT:Â GW has three more MAWPC contests on tap next weekend with a Friday night trip to Johns Hopkins and a Saturday doubleheader at Charles E. Smith Center Pool against La Salle (10 a.m.) and Bucknell (2 p.m.).
