Mavis Propels Men's Water Polo Past Johns Hopkins

Colonials host doubleheader MAWPC doubleheader Saturday
BALTIMORE - Andrew Mavis scored a season-high seven goals to lead George Washington men's water polo past Johns Hopkins, 21-18, on Friday night at Newton White Athletic Center.
The junior who earned All-American honors last season found the net four times in the final quarter to help the 20th-ranked Colonials hold off the Blue Jays, who are ranked No. 3 in the CWPA national Division III poll.
GW (11-4, 3-1 MAWPC) leaned on its offense to earn the road victory. After Johns Hopkins (3-4, 0-1) tied it at 11 with 5:11 left in the third quarter, the Colonials scored five of the next six goals to assert control.
Andras Levai scored two goals in quick succession and Mavis' tally 20 seconds into the fourth made it 16-12. The Blue Jays never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.
Atakan Destici registered four goals and four assists, Levai pitched in four goals three assists and Jack Kerwin added four goals to equal his career high set in last Sunday's win at Fordham. Zach Slaughter and Nick Schroeder also scored for the Colonials.
First-year Henry Maas also put together a strong performance in the victory with three assists, two steals and a field block. Austin Pyrch went the distance in net, tallying 13 saves for the Buff and Blue.
UP NEXT: GW makes its home debut Saturday with a doubleheader at Charles E. Smith Center Pool. The Colonials will face La Salle at 10 a.m. before meeting No. 15 Bucknell at 2 p.m.
