Men's Water Polo Splits to Open MAWPC Play

No. 18 Colonials beat La Salle before falling at Wagner
NEW YORK - George Washington men's water polo started its Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference slate Saturday by splitting a difficult doubleheader on the road.
The 18th-ranked Colonials started the day in Philadelphia with a 21-10 win over La Salle before heading north to Wagner where they fell to the Seahawks, 14-11, in the nightcap.
Atakan Destici and Jordan Blosser totaled five goals apiece to pace the Buff and Blue (9-4, 1-1 MAWPC).
GW 21, La Salle 10: The Colonials scored the first 10 goals and cruised to victory over the Explorers at Kirk Pool.
GW led 7-0 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to double digits on Isher Gill's goal with 6:13 left in the opening half.
Destici, Blosser, Josh Yardley and Andras Levai scored three goals apiece to lead a balanced attack. Gill found the net twice for the first multi-goal game of his career, while Zach Slaughter posted a team-high three assists to match his career high.
Austin Pyrch made 12 saves in the opening half before Matt Taylor took over in net and stopped four shots in his season debut.
Wagner 14, GW 11: The Seahawks dug in defensively in the final quarter to take a back-and-forth contest at Spiro Sports Center.
GW led 10-9 late in the third quarter, but Wagner tied it up and then went in front on a score in the closing seconds of the period. The Colonials managed just one goal over the final eight minutes as the Seahawks claimed the home victory to improve to 3-0 in MAWPC play.
Jack Kerwin scored a team-high three goals for GW with Blosser, Destici and Finn Lillis each supplying a pair.
Destici also did his part on the defensive end with a pair of steals and a field block.
Pyrch went the distance in net for the Colonials, recording 10 saves.
UP NEXT: GW wraps up its opening weekend of MAWPC play Sunday with a trip to Fordham at 10 a.m.
