Colonials open conference slate on the road
George Washington men's water polo kicks off Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play this weekend with three road games over two days.
The 18th-ranked Colonials open their bid for a repeat conference title and NCAA Tournament berth with a split doubleheader Saturday. They start the day at MAWPC newcomer La Salle before heading north to Wagner for a rematch of last season's conference final.
GW (8-3) wraps up the weekend at Fordham, playing at Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center, which will host the MAWPC Championship in November.
LAST TIME OUT: GW went 2-2 last weekend at the Aggie Roundup in California. The Colonials earned a Saturday sweep of Fresno Pacific and Whittier between narrow setbacks against No. 15 California Baptist and No. 17 San Jose State.
Andrew Mavis paced the offense on the weekend with a team-high 13 goals on 31 attempts, while Atakan Destici provided eight goals and nine assists.
PYRCH ON POINT: Austin Pyrch has earned two straight MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week awards for his play in net. The senior from Texas made 48 saves last weekend, including a career-high 15 in Sunday's 12-11 loss to San Jose State in sudden-victory overtime. For the season, he has totaled 121 saves, stopping 54.3 percent of the shots he's faced through 11 games. He's also tallied three assists and five steals.
SCOUTING LA SALLE: The Explorers (2-9) are coming off a 1-3 showing at the Bucknell Invitational.
GW beat La Salle, 22-3, at the season-opening Navy Open. The Colonials fell behind 2-1 in the opening minutes before running off 17 straight goals in the victory.
SCOUTING WAGNER: The Seahawks are 5-5 with all five of their losses coming against ranked foes. The most recent setback came Wednesday when they fell, 9-6, at No. 12 Princeton.
GW and Wagner squared off in a thriller three weeks ago at the Navy Open. The Colonials won 15-14, erasing a two-goal fourth-quarter deficit by scoring six times in the final period. Mavis (six goals) and Andras Levai (five goals) powered the Buff and Blue's attack.
SCOUTING FORDHAM: The Rams (4-6) split four games at the Bucknell Invitational last weekend, including conference losses to Wagner and the host Bison.
GW beat Fordham, 16-15 in overtime, in the MAWPC semifinals last season with Mavis scoring the game-winning goal with five seconds left in extra time.
COMING UP: GW has three more MAWPC games on the schedule next weekend, including its home debut. After traveling to Johns Hopkins on Sept. 28, the Colonials will host La Salle (10 a.m.) and Bucknell (2 p.m.) at Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Sept. 29.
