Colonials fell to San Jose State in Aggie Roundup finale
DAVIS, Calif. – George Washington men's water polo battled No. 17 San Jose State into sudden-victory overtime Sunday before falling 12-11 in its weekend finale at the Aggie Roundup.
The 15th-ranked Colonials played San Jose State even through regulation and two three-minute overtimes before Adam Bado scored in the third extra period to win it for the Spartans.
Andrew Mavis scored four goals to pace the Buff and Blue, who sit at 8-3 after splitting four games at the tournament hosted by UC Davis.
GW led 9-7 on a goal by Mavis in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but San Jose State scored the final two goals of regulation to force overtime.
The teams continued to go back and forth in overtime with Andras Levai striking first for GW. After two straight San Jose State scores, Mavis tied it again with 1:34 left in the second overtime period.
That set up the sudden-victory finish with San Jose State's Bado netting the decisive goal.
Jack Kerwin scored three goals for GW, and Andras Levai tallied two goals, an assist and three steals. First-years Nick Schroeder and DJ Davis provided the other two scores for the Colonials.
Austin Pyrch continued his strong play in net, tying his career high with 15 saves.
UP NEXT: GW opens Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play on the road next weekend. The Colonials start their bid for a repeat conference title with a split doubleheader at La Salle and Wagner on Saturday before traveling to Fordham on Sunday.
