ARLINGTON, Va. - The George Washington baseball team returned to Tucker Field at Barcroft Park for its final home series of the season, but fell to VCU, 6-0, in Friday's series opener.
Key Stats
- VCU took a 2-0 run lead in the bottom of the second inning before using a pair of home runs on the way to a four-run fourth.
- It was all the Rams would need as GW struggled at the plate, managing just one hit on the day by sophomore Steven Barmakian.
- Three VCU pitchers combined on the one-hit shutout and the trio faced the minimum amount of batters.
- Senior Tyler Swiggart was solid in relief. He entered the game in the fifth inning and blanked the Rams over five shutout innings. He scattered five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Scoring - Top 2: A pair of walks moved into scoring position on a balk, then with two outs a two-run double put the Rams on top (VCU 2, GW 0).
- Top 4: VCU got a leadoff home run to start the fourth. Later in the inning a three-run home run extended the lead (VCU 6, GW 0).
Up Next - Game two will be played on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
