Palazzolo Leading Golf at Atlantic 10 Championship

ORLANDO -- Vince Palazzolo paced the GW golf team with a 2-over par 74 to sit in a tie for sixth after the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Grand Cypress Golf Club.
As a team, the Colonials are in ninth place after shooting 317, but they aren't out of contention just yet after difficult scoring conditions didn't see a single team in the field post a sub-300 round. Dayton and Davidson each managed to turn in a 12-over 300 with the Flyers' Tripp French carding the only score in red figures with a 1-under 71. Alister Balcombe of VCU and Brody King of Rhode Island shot even par, while the remaining 52 players in the field were over par.
Palazzolo was tied for the lead for part of the day, mixing three birdies with two bogeys on the front nine to shoot 35 going out. After parring 10, 11 and 12, he slipped out of the lead with bogeys on three of his final five holes. Palazzolo saw birdie putts slide just past the hole on 14 and 16, and his bogey on the par-5 15th came after his chip hit the flag stick before settling 12 feet away. The ensuing par putt came up a rotation short.
Still, Palazzolo's 74 was more than five strokes better than the scoring average of 78.94 on a day that featured tough pin positions, slippery greens and gusty winds. Jack Porcelli shot a 79 and is T-30th, followed by Christian Cichan (81), Logan Lowe (83) and Adrian Castagnola (86).
"Vince posted a good score today, and Jack really battled through after having adversity in the middle of his round," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "The course was tough, and the scores were tough today. We've got a lot of work to do, but the one thing I told the guys was the only way this tournament goes south is if we lose hope that we can come back. Bigger leads have been overtaken in the past, and we've got more than capable guys of playing special golf."
